They do not fear the unknown: Ancylus fluviatilis (Mollusca, Planorbidae) shows no predator avoidance behavior towards a novel invasive predator

چکیده

Abstract Biological invasion is a strong threat to native biodiversity, with limnic systems being especially vulnerable due historical separation and resulting prey naivety. The naivety hypothesis states that species may not be able recognize novel predators lack of common evolutionary background and, therefore, become easy targets. In laboratory experiment, we added cues European bullhead ( Cottus gobio Linnaeus, 1758) invasive round goby [ Neogobius melanostomus (Pallas, 1814)] Ancylus fluviatilis Müller, 1774 originating from two different populations within the same river (one naive, one experienced towards goby) compared their predator avoidance behavior. Individuals both recognized known C. reduced locomotive activity. To cues, however, naive individuals did respond, thereby supporting hypothesis. Experienced individuals, in contrast, activity, suggesting learning effect co-occurrence prey. At fast moving fronts highly like N. melanostomus, can, hence, enhance negative impact on ecosystems. Behavioral adaptation reactions could, play an important role ecosystem resilience temporal dynamics.

Predator avoidance by nauplii

We examined anti-predation strategies in relation to motility patterns for early and late nauplii of 6 species of copepods (Calanus helgolandicus, Centropages typicus, Eurytemora affinis, Euterpina acutifrons, Acartia tonsa and Temora longicornis). Remote detection and escape abilities were quantified in siphon flows. Nauplii respond with distinct escape jumps at speciesand stagespecific averag...

Effects of Neonatal Handling on Play Behavior and Fear Towards a Predator Odor in Juvenile Rats

The effects of brief daily separation, also known as "handling," during the first 2 weeks of life on play behavior and fearfulness toward a predatory odor were assessed in juvenile rats. Handled rats were more playful than nonhandled control rats, and while handling had no effect on the direct response of these rats toward a predatory odor, handled rats did not exhibit a conditioned suppression...

Dynamical behavior of a stage structured prey-predator model

In this paper, a new stage structured prey-predator model with linear functional response is proposed and studied. The stages for prey have been considered. The proposed mathematical model consists of three nonlinear ordinary differential equations to describe the interaction among juvenile prey, adult prey and predator populations. The model is analyzed by using linear stability analysis to ob...

Predator Avoidance in Extremophile Fish

Extreme habitats are often characterized by reduced predation pressures, thus representing refuges for the inhabiting species. The present study was designed to investigate predator avoidance of extremophile populations of Poecilia mexicana and P. sulphuraria that either live in hydrogen sulfide-rich (sulfidic) springs or cave habitats, both of which are known to have impoverished piscine preda...

Fortune favours the bold: a higher predator reduces the impact of a native but not an invasive intermediate predator.

Emergent multiple predator effects (MPEs) might radically alter predictions of predatory impact that are based solely on the impact of individuals. In the context of biological invasions, determining if and how the individual-level impacts of invasive predators relates to their impacts in multiple-individual situations will inform understanding of how such impacts might propagate through recipi...
